Program Language & Guidance

Program Naming, Subtitles, and Descriptions

When thinking about the name, potential subtitles, and descriptions of your retreats or programs, we encourage you to be mindful of communicating who the audience for the program is and making it easy for people to identify their interests in the program. While we don’t want to lose any of the wonderful creativity facilitators bring to these components of your programs, we do believe it’s beneficial for potential participants scanning the program calendar to have a clear sense of what each program has to offer.

We often received feedback about our old website from potential participants who found it challenging to find programs on the program calendar that made sense for them based on very little information. Our new website’s program calendar was designed with this feedback in mind and now includes the program title, brief description, and focus area labels to help participants more easily identify programs of interest.

Using Courage & Renewal Trademarks

The following are all trademarks held by the Center for Courage & Renewal:

  • Courage to Teach®
  • Courage to Lead®
  • Courage & Renewal®
  • Circle of Trust®
  • Healing the Heart of Democracy®
  • The Courage Way®

Our ability to maintain the legal rights to these trademarks and provide them for facilitators to use is dependent on observing particular guidelines for their usage. If you use one of these trademarks for your retreat or program, the retreat must adhere to the Courage & Renewal® approach and fully incorporate Courage & Renewal touchstones, principles, and practices. In addition, retreats or programs that use these trademarks may only be facilitated by Courage & Renewal Facilitators. From time to time, we may request a copy of the retreat agenda from facilitators using these trademarks to add to our trademark preservation file for review by our legal team.

If you have any questions about trademark usage please don’t hesitate to reach out to Nichelle Harrison at nichelle@couragerenewal.org.

Attribution of the Approach

All programs listed on the Courage & Renewal program calendar should include some form of attribution for the Courage & Renewal® approach in the program description. Regardless of the way you choose to attribute the approach, we encourage you to do so consistently across all channels and platforms where you’re promoting your retreat. Some examples that you might choose from include (but aren’t limited to):

  • “This retreat is rooted in the Courage & Renewal® approach.”
  • “This retreat is informed by the Courage & Renewal® approach, which was developed by Parker J. Palmer and the Center for Courage & Renewal and informed by centuries of wisdom traditions from around the world.”
  • “This retreat draws on the principles and practices of the Courage & Renewal® approach, as well as…”

Avoiding Copyright Violations

Please make every effort to avoid copyright violations within your program naming, texts, supporting materials and imagery. Make the extra effort to seek permission for any creative works that are not considered fair use. If you have any questions about this please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Nondiscrimination Policy

CCR’s nondiscrimination policy is as follows: “The Center for Courage & Renewal and its facilitators do not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, age, height, weight, physical or mental ability, veteran status, military obligations, and marital status.” We include this on every program page on our website and encourage you to include this language on other channels where your retreats and programs are being promoted.

Cancellation Policy

We encourage all facilitators to offer a clear and explicit cancellation policy for every retreat/program they lead. Here is an example of a cancellation policy for one of CCR’s upcoming programs:

“We understand that life challenges emerge and changes happen. If for any reason you need to cancel your registration, you must do so by sending an email to Taylor Culliver at taylor@couragerenewal.org. If you cancel your registration 30 days or more prior to the program start date you will receive a full refund minus your $150 non-refundable deposit. Between 30 days and 14 days prior to the start date you will receive a 50% refund minus your $150 non-refundable deposit. Refunds will not be granted within 2 weeks of the program start date. Extraordinary circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis. All refund requests must be made by you, the registrant. CCR also reserves the right to cancel this program if necessary due to low enrollment or other circumstances that would make the program nonviable. In the event that CCR must cancel a program, registrants will receive a full refund.”
