Join us for this onsite, three-day, two-night retreat as we explore the wisdom of birds: what we can discover if we pause to celebrate, be inspired by, and learn from and with our more-than-human relatives.
This program is being independently organized and led by a Courage & Renewal Facilitator(s) prepared by the Center for Courage & Renewal. As I watched the brilliant red bird,
I thought about what it means to sing or do anything with your whole heart and soul.
And I realized that in fact I wanted to do everything— sing, speak, teach, garden, write, organize, love—
with the full focus and joy with which this cardinal greeted the sun.”
~Trish O’Kane, in: Birding to Change the World, p. 92.
Birds are extraordinary beings. They offer us lessons in how to expand our views of kinship, connection to place, loss, beauty, and the capacity to navigate, to find home. Gifted with the ability to nest, fly, lay eggs, nurture fledglings, soar, and migrate, we have so much to learn from them, if we pause to pay attention.
Please join us for this on-site three-day, two-night retreat, during which we will nurture a trustworthy space to invite an exploration of the extraordinary qualities of birds, their wisdom, and what we can discover through reflecting with and about them. Not a “birding retreat” per se, this contemplative experience will focus on deeper layers of discovery of self and other, in a striking natural setting.
This Circle of Trust® retreat is offered as a space in which to reconnect with curiosity, awe and wonder, cultivating a deeper appreciation for the lessons offered by our more-than-human relatives. Through the Courage & Renewal approach, creative expression, writing, imagination, time outdoors, and inner exploration, this retreat invites you to connect with yourself and others—to slow down, reflect and notice. The Wisdom of Birds will be grounded in the Courage & Renewal® approach which you can learn more about in Parker J. Palmer’s book, A Hidden Wholeness. All are welcome.
This three-day retreat follows a rhythm of large group, small group, and individual reflection. There will be ample time for exploring on your own throughout the retreat. A more detailed agenda will be provided with the welcome bundle sent prior to the retreat.
This retreat will be held at Light on the Hill, a retreat center providing a sacred space where seekers can find peace and solace away from their everyday pursuits. Perched high in the hills of Van Etten in Central-Upstate New York, the center is located on 236 acres of woods, streams, gorges, and walking paths, and offers panoramic views of the Allegheny Mountains. The Inner Light Lodge provides a spacious, light-filled dwelling surrounded by nature and glorious views—ideal for groups engaging in inner work. A beautiful stone labyrinth offers additional space for contemplative reflection.
Upon request, we can also provide information about air travel, local interests, and tips for enjoying a vacation in the beautiful Niagara Falls and Finger Lakes region following this retreat—during one of the most stunning times of the year in this region. The fall season is also a time of tremendous bird migration; the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge is just 45 minutes away, with peak activity of tens of thousands of shorebirds, waterfowl and geese. The world-renowned Cornell Lab of Ornithology is only 28 miles (45 minutes) from the retreat center, for those who may wish to arrange for a visit before or after the retreat.
The cost covers two nights of beautiful lodging and delicious, nourishing vegetarian meals prepared by Light on the Hill retreat centers’ culinary staff using locally sourced ingredients.
$535.00 early bird rate if you enroll prior to March 1, 2027.
If you would like to contribute to a scholarship fund, you may include additional payment of any amount! We hope to work with participants to accommodate all who wish to attend. Please contact us with questions.
