Freedom in Restraint: Writing into Less as More

Please join us for a one-and-a-half-day contemplative poetry writing retreat as we explore the potential for freedom in restraint—the value of simplicity, holding back and “just enoughness,” even as we may feel pressures for constant growth, for “more.”

Inspired by dark and naked aspen,

she’s been practicing emptiness—

perhaps you, too, have seen the way

that barren arms can better hold

the changing colors of the sky…

…All these years she thought the point

was to be full. Now she marvels

at how resonant she is without

so much clutter—how resounding,

the honest beating of her heart.

Excerpt from More, Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer

September in the northern hemisphere is a time of turning a seasonal corner. As we witness nature settling into more subtle, then potent changes, we may experience a range of emotions and however we may feel about the coming of fall and winter, it is necessary for the cycle of the seasons to complete this turn around the wheel. After the exuberance and fecundity of summer with its riot of color and fruitfulness, it is natural to pare down and enjoy the quieter experience—and even, the freedom—associated with simplicity.

Restraint is not usually viewed as the most exciting quality in town. It certainly doesn’t get the joyful reception given to plenty and abundance! In our “more is more” culture that demands we constantly add, build, grow, ascend, and push our opinions forward, holding back can be hard. Restraint asks for our patience. It’s quieter, more contained, and that can be uncomfortable, even as it is a necessary balance to surplus. And yet there can be such a freedom in “just enough.” What better time to explore the value of restraint through writing poetry, than during the approach of the fall season?

Freedom in Restraint: Writing into Less as More will be grounded in the Courage & Renewal® approach which you can learn more about in Parker J. Palmer’s book, A Hidden Wholeness. All are welcome.
