Facing the Mess: Courage to Come Alive in Complicated Times

The last few years have been so hard. We yearn for healing and clarity in the midst of the mess. Especially in the turbulent times in which we live it’s all the more crucial that we renew our spirits and reconnect what we do with who we are.

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs.
Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

~ Howard Thurman

The last few years have been so hard. We’re exhausted, stretched, frayed. Many of us have been re-evaluating our lives, our relationships, our careers. We yearn for healing and clarity in the midst of the mess. Especially in the turbulent times in which we live it’s all the more crucial that we renew our spirits and reconnect what we do with who we are.

“Facing the Mess: Courage to Come Alive in Complicated Times” is a rare opportunity to explore your own most profound questions of identity and purpose, and to renew your capacity to live, work, and lead from a place that’s firmly grounded both in the realities of these challenging times and in your most authentic self.

Please join facilitators Lucia Eitzen and Chris Johnson for this life-giving retreat, Sunday, February 21 at 3 pm through Wednesday, February 24 at noon, at Rivendell Retreat Centre on Bowen Island, BC. This Courage & Renewal® gathering will help you to:

  • Explore your sense of identity, purpose, and calling in light of these complicated times, and with an eye toward what might want to emerge in the next steps of the journey.
  • Recognize and celebrate the gifts of beauty in the world and in our lives.
  • Deepen your understanding of the generative tension between brokenness and beauty.
  • Ask open and honest questions that can reveal new depths of insight and wisdom.
  • Be held by a remarkable community of support, inspiration, and positive relationship.

Our time together will include a nourishing mix of solitude and silence, conversation, and opportunity for reflective practice (writing, drawing, movement…). It will be grounded in your own experience and fueled with insights from poets, scholars, artists, naturalists, musicians, and various wisdom traditions. Strictly confidential practices of deep listening, discernment, and mutual support will be a key component.

Your Facilitators:

Courage & Renewal Facilitator, Dr. Chris Johnson will be joined by Lucia Eitzen, M.A. who suffers from too many interests and a craving for contemplative activities. At age 52 she realizes it is time to pursue what truly matters, and getting involved with retreat facilitation is part of that pursuit. She has gathered experience as a schoolteacher, music instructor, counsellor, caregiver, gardener; lived in a co-housing community for a decade; and learned about conservation and sustainable agriculture with an environmental organization because it is time to change the way people treat the earth. Writing, making music, meaningful conversations, and listening for divine spirit surrounded by nature, are practices that help her grow.

Rivendell Retreat is a place of peace and quiet away from the noise, distractions and pressures of the city, with magnificent views of mountains, forests and seas. A sanctuary with a network of trails that offer the opportunity for discovering new intimacy with the sacred while exploring forest paths and the wonders of creation.  With gratitude for their ongoing care and stewardship of the land we acknowledge that the Rivendell sites are located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish people; Nex̱wlélex̱wm (Bowen Island) is traditional Squamish territory. Rivendell practices hospitality, welcoming the stranger and providing openness and acceptance to all who visit.
