Building Beloved Community

Join us for a Saturday Retreat in Carmel, California. An exploration of the Soul’s role in what it means to build Beloved Community. Drawing inspiration from the works of Howard Thurman, MLK, and others in Poetry and music, we will explore ways of being and belonging that empower us to engage with the tensions and polarities within our communities.

The vision of the Beloved Community—first articulated by philosopher Josiah Royce and later championed by The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement—calls us into a way of being rooted in love, interdependence, and the inherent worth of all life. It is a vision of a world where conflict is met with nonviolence, where all people are embraced with kindness and compassion, and where we work together to end hunger, poverty, prejudice, homelessness, environmental destruction, and injustice.

This retreat invites you into the dance of love, peace, and reconciliation—a journey of renewal and reflection in the company of others. Guided by the Courage & Renewal Approach, we will create a Circle of Trust®, a space of deep listening and authentic presence.

Through time in solitude and shared reflection, you will have the opportunity to speak from your heart and listen deeply to others. Together, we will cultivate trust—the kind that awakens the true self and invites courageous presence in the world.

This will take place in the Community Room of All Saints’ Episcopal Church at 9th and Dolores in Carmel, California
